Nursing Knowledge: 2015 Big Data Science Conference

The 2015 Nursing Knowledge: Big Data & Science Conference for Transforming Health Care conference will be held on June 3 – 5, 2015 in Minneapolis, MN, USA. This third annual national conference is designed to advance an action plan to create sharable, comparable nursing data that is integrated into the electronic health record. NI2016 – Student Wearable Design Contest; Submission Deadline 01 April, 2015

The purpose of the NI2016 Student Wearable Contest is to encourage collaborative teams to develop and share innovative ideas in wearable or ubiquitous technologies to promote mobile-health, connected health or ubiquitous computing in health care. The goal is to allow the next generation of interprofessional collaborative teams to showcase how technologies can transform nursing and health care.

Topic areas of the contest: Wearable, Mobile and ubiquitous computing – including wearable devices, mobile apps, integration of mobile technologies into the care continuum.

The description of the prototype must:

1. provide evidence that it is innovative or new;
2. show its relevance to patient / family care or health care professional
3. demonstrate a change in the care of a patient / family or in the work of health care professionals
4. follow acceptable standards, privacy and data protection guidelines
5. Describe the details of its usability (plan for usability testing or results of testing)
6. include a visualization of the idea that should include:
   a. Technical architecture
   b. Photo or drawing
7. Maturity of device
   a. What stage is it now?
   b. What stage of maturity at time of presentation (June 2016)?
8. should represent an interprofessional collaboration among students that encourages work across schools, across degrees, across disciplines (nursing, health professions, engineering, computer sciences, etc)
9. no more than two Universities can work together.

SINI 2015 (Nursing Informatics) Call for Abstracts is Open

SINI 2015 (Summer Institute in Nursing Informatics) is the 25th anniversary event of this long-running series, hosted by the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Athabasca University (Canada) Seeking Translational Nursing Research Chair in eHealth Literacy

Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions (AIHS) is sponsoring a Translational Research Chair position at Athabasca University that will bridge interests in health information technology, electronic communication and knowledge translation to the public and help create a systematic approach to the study of eHealth literacy.

The Nursing Research Chair in eHealth Literacy will advance understanding of all facets of eHealth literacy with particular focus on the public’s actions related to procuring, evaluating and using eHealth information and electronically generated self-health data, and the health care professionals’ role in communicating, educating and empowering the use of eHealth information and self-health data. As a researcher in eHealth literacy, the Chair will build an integrated research team that will make an impact on the health of Canadians and on global health knowledge. Working in collaboration with other institutional partners in related fields, there is potential for developing synergies related to areas such as health promotion, disease prevention and analytics and personalized medicine. There is also potential for synergy with Athabasca University’s Canada Research Chair in Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Management.

The appointment will be made at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.

NI2016, 13th International Congress in Nursing Informatics Geneva; June 25-29, 2016

NI Congresses – Onwards from Taipei in 2014 to Geneva 2016

NI2014, the 12th International Congress on Nursing Informatics (www.ni2014.org) held in Taipei, Taiwan is now over. So, the international nursing informatics community begins to turn its mind to the next NI Congress, NI2016, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The 13th International Congress on Nursing Informatics, held under the auspices of IMIA-NI, and hosted by the Swiss Nursing Association, among other orgnisations, will be held in Geneva, Switzerland on 25-29 June, 2016. The website is already live at http://www.ni2016.org and will be further developed over the next two years. There will be very early bird registration rates (fordelegates, accompanying persons, etc) from 01 July 2014 to 30 June 2015, followed by increasing rates following as the event nears – see http://ni2016.org/registration/

The Call for Papers will open on 30 March, 2015, with a submission deadline of 30 September, 2015. See http://ni2016.org/submission/ The theme of the conference will be eHealth for all. Every level collaboration – From project to realization. A number of innovations will be developed and announced over the coming months.

New TIGER Report, 2014 – Recommendations for the Innovative Nurse Leader

The TIGER Initiative Foundation has released a new leadership collaborative report, The Leadership Imperative: TIGER’s Recommendations for Integrating Technology to Transform Practice and Education (2014) [download]. This new report resulted from a continued recognition of how critical leadership is to fulfilling the TIGER vision and mission, and to providing transformational leadership that drives and executes the transformation of healthcare.

The report addresses the need to focus on both practice and technology, as well as providing valuable information, tools and resources for leaders to access and utilize as they integrate technology into practice and education. The foreword, by Angela Barron McBride, PhD, RN, FAAN notes that “The question for every nurse and every hospital board is how you go about promoting transformational change in which the emphasis is not on transitory, isolated performance improvements by individuals, but on sustained, assimilated, comprehensive change of the whole (Lukas et al., 2007) and this report offers one answer: nurse leaders knowledgeable about how information technology can help redesign practices so that they are standardized, evidence-based and clinically integrated, and reinforce the values of a caring culture.” Please download, read and share this new TIGER report.
