UPDATE: Medicine 2.0’14 Conferences: Submission Deadline 19 March

The deadline is rapidly approaching for submission of abstracts to the Medicine 2.0’14 events. There will be two events in 2014, but the submission deadline for both is March 19th, 2014, midnight EST.

The Medicine 2.0 events have been held annually since the first in Toronto in 2008 – Medicine 2.0: Social Media, Mobile Apps, and Internet/Web 2.0 in Health, Medicine and Biomedical Research.

Medicine 2.0 Congress: New Features for 2014

med20The latest successful Medicine 2.0 Conference (the 6th World Congress on Social Media, Mobile Apps, Internet/Web 2.0) has completed in London (http://www.medicine20congress.com/ocs/index.php/med/med2013). The event attracted more than 520 participants, and views on the event were shared widely via Twitter and other social media tools. Materials from the Congress are available via the website. A transcript of the tweets around the event (hashtag #med2) is available >>> (warning: latter part of transcript contains spam bot tweets).

Pat Rich, from the Canadian Medical Association, has shared his presentation via slideshare, and other presentations are available.

In 2014, there will be two events – Medicine 2.0’14 (Maui/Hawaii, USA on 23-24 November) and Medicine 2.0’14 Europe (Malaga, Spain – early October). There will be a single submission deadline to either/both events of March 14, 2014. Further news will follow on the Medicine 2.0 Congress website (http://www.medicine20congress.com).

Submission Deadlines: Medicine 2.0’12 and AMIA 2012

Two important conference submission deadlines are upon us within the next few days. If you are intending to submit either an abstract to the Medicine 2.0’12 conference, or a proposal to the AMIA 2012 Annual Symposium, then time is running out.

Medicine 2.0’12 – extended deadline now March 14. The Call for Abstracts, Presentations, Interactive Demos, Tabletop (Tradeshow) Presentation, Startup Pitches and Panel Proposal was extended and will now close on March 14. See http://www.medicine20congress.com/ocs/index.php/med/med2012/schedConf/cfp for full details and any exceptions.

Medicine 2.0 ’12, aka the 5th World Congress on Social Media, Mobile Apps, and Internet/Web2.0 in Health and Medicine, this year hosted in Boston at Harvard Medical School, will once again be very international and contain a unique mix of traditional academic/research, practice and business presentations, keynote presentations, and panel discussions to discuss emerging technologies in health and medicine, with an emphasis on Internet-based, social media, and mobile technologies. Early bird registration is open.

IMIA supports this conference and the IMIA Medicine 2.0 Award will be administered by the IMIA Social Media Working Group.

AMIA 2012 – the Call for Proposals closes on March 15. AMIA 2012 submissions will be categorized as either foundational contributions of novel informatics methods, or as reports of the application of informatics in the biomedical sciences or the day-to-day practice of health care. Medicine 2.0’12 Conference: March 07 is Abstract Submission Deadline

The abstract submission deadline for Medicine 2.0’12 is now only 3 days away – submissions close on 07 March – full information about the Call for Abstracts is available via the conference website at http://tinyurl.com/med2012call

There will be five ways to present work at Medicine 2.0 ’12 Boston – the Call for Abstracts, seeks work to be presented as Presentations, Interactive Demos, Tabletop (Tradeshow) Presentation, Startup Pitches and Panel Proposals. Medicine 2.0 ’12, aka the 5th World Congress on Social Media, Mobile Apps, and Internet/Web2.0 in Health and Medicine, will be hosted in Boston at Harvard Medical School, will once again be very international and contain a unique mix of traditional academic/research, practice and business presentations, keynote presentations, and panel discussions to discuss emerging technologies in health and medicine, with an emphasis on Internet-based, social media, and mobile technologies.

Among the many topics are: Building virtual communities and social networking applications for health professionals, patients and consumers;  Science 2.0, collaborative biomedical research, academic / scholarly communication, publishing and peer review; Digital Disease Detection and Biosurveillance using Twitter and other social media/mhealth/Internet sources; The Quantified Self: tracking behavior and health; Semantic Web (“Web 3.0”) applications; Web 2.0 approaches for clinical practice, clinical research, quality monitoring; mHealth Applications; Ubiquitous, pervasive ehealth; and much more.

The conference strives for an interdisciplinary mix of presenters from different countries and disciplines (e.g. health care, social sciences, computer science, engineering, or business) and with a different angle (research, practice, and business).

IMIA continues to support this event, and the IMIA Medicine 2.0 Award will be administered by the IMIA Social Media Working Group. A new mhealth award, sponsored by iMedicalApps, will be made for the best paper on mobile health presented at the 2012 Medicine 2.0 conference in Boston.

Confirmed keynote speakers include Jamie Heywood from PatientsLikeMe and John Brownstein from Healthmap.

IMIA Medicine 2.0 Awards and Medicine 2.0 Congresses

Several members of the IMIA Social Media Working Group (SMWG) participated in the recent Medicine 2.0’11 Congress, and associated Stanford Summit, held at Stanford University, California on 16-18 September, 2011 (http://www.medicine20congress.com). IMIA SMWG members formed the secondary review committee for many of the submissions, in particular, the research-focused submissions.

The IMIA Medicine 2.0 Award (for the best research-based paper, from a younger scientist) was given to Jackie Bender, from the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, Toronto, Canada for her paper “What Is the Role of Online Support for the Supporters? a Multi-Method Study Examining the Use of Online Communities among Breast Cancer Peer Support Providers”. In addition, IMIA SMWG members helped to judge a Stanford University/IMIA SMWG poster award, which went to Osman Ahmed from University of Otago, New Zealand for his poster ” iCon: Utilizing Facebook to Deliver Best-Practice Concussion Management” (see the IMIA SMWG site for links to the winning submissions). The awards were announced by Dr Chris Paton, IMIA SMWG chair, at the closing session of Medicine 2.0’11.

Medicine 2.0’11 – Stanford CA, September 16-18, 2011

Medicine 2.0’11, the fourth world congress on social media and Web 2.0 in health, medicine and biomedical research (aka Medicine 2.0 Fall Conference 2011) will take place on September 16-18, 2011 (see http://www.medicine20congress.com). The event will be hosted by the Stanford University School of Medicine, and will be held at the school’s brand new $90 millon Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge. This is in Silicon Valley, home to many of the world’s preeminent technology companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo, Intel, and others. Stanford University is located in Northern California, approximately 35 miles south of San Francisco.

As in previous years, IMIA will be a supporting organisation for the event. Members of IMIA’s Social Media Working Group will be actively involved in many aspects of the event, and have formed the abstract and poster secondary review committee.

There are two back-to-back and linked events – attendees can register for one or both. The Stanford Summit will be held on September 16, and the main Medicine 2.0 Congress will be held on September 17 and 18.

Medicine 2.0’11 Conference – Call for Submissions Open

The Call for Submissions for the Medicine 2.0’11 conference is now open. The Call for Abstracts, Interactive Demos, Startup Pitches and Panel Proposals (note some of the new categories) closes on March 1st, 2011.

Medicine 2.0’10 (Maastricht, Netherlands) – Final Programme

The final programme for Medicine 2.0’10 is now available through the event website at http://www.medicine20congress.com

The Medicine 2.0’10 meeting will take place on 29-30 November in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht. The University of Twente (UT), the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (UMCN) and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) will host Medicine 2.0’10. The scientific programme comprises over 70 oral presentations and 40 poster presentations from more than twenty countries. Contributions include current trends, bioethics 2.0, infodemiology, persuasive technology, business modeling, country reports, eMental health, self management, social networking in health, education 2.0, patient empowerment and participatory health care.

Among the major speakers will be Dr. Marc Sprenger, head of the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Elizabeth Murray (University College, London), Dr. B J Fogg (Stanford University, US), Alexander Schachinger (Germany) and Dr. Bas Bloem (Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, NL).

Medicine 2.0 is the annual open, international conference on Web 2.0 applications in health and medicine, also known as the World Congress on Social Networking and Web 2.0 Applications in Medicine, Health, Health Care, and Biomedical Research. The congress is organized and co-sponsored by the Journal of Medical Internet Research, the International Medical Informatics Association, the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation,  and a number of other sponsoring organizations.
