First International Health Information Management Conference for Africa

Our colleague Angelika Haendel, President of IFHIMA (www.ifhima.org) writes:

The Health Information Manager’s Association of Nigeria (HIMAN) and the International Federation of Health Information Management Associations (IFHIMA) are pleased to invite delegates from Africa and around the world to attend the 1st International Health Information Management Conference for Africa – to be held at the National Sickle Cell Foundation, Lagos, Nigeria – August 12th to 14th 2014

The conference theme of this important conference for the Africa region is “Knowing It Better” – this is a concept and process-oriented information system in the healthcare industry, which involves the implementation and adoption of EHR and developing standard procedures for categorizing diseases for morbidity and mortality reporting. The result of the integration of EHR would address specific characteristics in the healthcare processes, increase the quality and effectiveness of medical services including shared semantics of healthcare domain concepts designed to strengthen communications amongst healthcare providers.

The programme will feature eminent speakers from WHO, IFHIMA and other HIM/HIT/HI organizations; and topics will include:

  • Developing Human Resources for HIM Practice
  • A vision for Better Health for Africa enabled by Electronic Health Records
  • Improving the Quality of Health Information Systems in Africa
  • WHO’s ICD 10 Training Initiative for Africa
  • Ethical Issues Surrounding the Use of Health Information
  • Prospects and Challenges of Telemedicine

Registration form should be returned ASAP to: HIMAN President, Health Records Dept., LUTH, Lagos, Nigeria nhra009[at]yahoo.com

AHIMA/IFHIMA Seeking Applications for Global Workforce Council (GHWC)

The U.S. Department of Commerce is supporting the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA – http://www.ahima.org/) and its partner the International Federation of Health Information Management Associations (IFHIMA – http://www.ifhima.org/) in an initiative to establish a global health information curricula and competency standard that provides a framework for healthcare and education systems worldwide to update and or build a workforce strategy.

The first step to advance a health information education and workforce training standard is establishing a Global Workforce Council (GHWC). The GHWC will oversee the development of an internationally applicable curricula and competency standard in HIM, HI and HIT. The standard will be developed in an open and transparent manner that engages countries and experts internationally.

The GHWC will consist of thirteen appointed members with a cross section of expertise from around the globe. Eleven representatives will be recruited from the six IFHIMA/WHO regions and from select target countries. AHIMA, the AHIMA Foundation and IFHIMA are seeking applicants for the GHWC positions. They are seeking council candidates who have demonstrated leadership in the healthcare and/or education system, and who possess recognition and influence within their country or region and the ability to gain support for the health information curricula standard with various stakeholder groups. Council members will participate in the development and dissemination of the curricula/competency standard through regular conference calls (e.g. monthly initially and then less frequently over time) and one face to face meeting per year. Council appointments are for 2-3 years.

IMIA has been involved in the planning team to bring the work to this stage, and we ask you to distribute this to your colleagues and others to help in identifying and inviting potential candidates for the Council from the six IFHIMA/WHO regions – Africa, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, South East Asia, and Western Pacific and from select target countries including Brazil, India and the GCC

The use of health information technology products and services is growing globally as countries innovate their healthcare system to improve care/outcomes and reduce costs. All healthcare systems, regardless of how well financed or organized, need sufficient numbers of well-trained and highly skilled workers to implement and manage long-term their health information and technology systems. To address the changing needs for a skilled workforce, a comprehensive education and workforce strategy is needed for health information management (HIM), health informatics (HI) and health information technology (HIT). Many of the technology requirements (e.g., electronic health records), standards (e.g., Health Level 7), and terminologies (e.g., SNOMED, ICD-10) are global in nature supporting the need for a defined set of competencies for HIM, HI and HIT workers globally.

The attached document [download] provides more information about the GHWC and an application form that can be used by applicants. Applications are due on April 4, 2014 and should be submitted by e-mail to info[at]ahimafoundation.org. Council applications will be reviewed by a multi-stakeholder nominating committee comprised of members from various associations and countries. Council members will be selected by mid April. If you have questions please contact Michelle Dougherty from the AHIMA Foundation at michelle.dougherty[at]ahimafoundation.org (do NOT contact IMIA with queries or applications).
