Surrey Informatics Summer School (UK), 6-11 July 2014

clininfeuThe Clinical Informatics and Health Outcomes Research Group of the Department of Health Care Management & Policy at the University of Surrey invite you to attend their third annual 6 day intensive short course for health care professionals and analysts wanting to work with routine health data to measure quality and improve outcomes. This health informatics short course is aimed at clinicians, researchers, managers and analysts within the health care sector, and is being organised and delivered by the University of Surrey on 6-11 July, 2014. The course is taught by leading informatics academics and practitioners with international reputations, including Professor Simon de Lusignan, Professor of Primary Care and Clinical Informatics at the University of Surrey; Medical Director of the RCGP Research and Surveillance Centre; practicing GP; and Professor Simon Jones, Chair in Health Care Management & Policy at the University of Surrey; previously Chief Statistician at Dr Foster Intelligence. The course is intensive and primarily designed for residential students. There are no entry requirements and the course is suitable and flexible enough to accommodate those with little or no statistical experience looking to find pragmatic ways of using data as well as those advanced in analytics seeking to enhance their technical skills. The venue will be the Faculty of Business Economics and Law University of Surrey, Guildford, GU 2 7XH, United Kingdom.

Health Informatics Scotland 2013 – CFP Closes 15 May

The Health Informatics Scotland (HIS’13) conference is a leading annual conference and exhibition held to showcase the latest advances in the field of health informatics. Following the introduction of a very successful research stream in 2012, submissions are invited for: Research Papers; Presentations; Posters; Workshop Proposals. This event will be held on 18-19 September, 2013 at the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Riccarton Campus, Edinburgh, Scotland.

The four themes for 2013 are:

  • “eHealth Closing the Loop! Connecting and Communicating information between secondary & primary; health & social care; NHS & Patient.”
  • “Nursing Impact on eHealth: a stream jointly run with BCS Nursing Group and Royal College of Nursing eHealth Group”
  • “Current Research in Health Informatics: a stream jointly run by the major universities in Scotland”
  • “A Scottish Jam/Hack/Camp Un-Conference with a mobile ‘App’ development theme. Participate and make up your own agenda as the event rolls on.”

In addition, the event:

  • will be hosting the first “Derek Hoy Memorial Lecture”
  • will also hold the NHS Scotland eHealth Awards
  • on behalf of the BCS Nursing group we will be awarding the Dame Phyllis Friend Award to a UK nurse involved in innovative informatics or eHealth work.

Submission deadlines:

  • 15th May 2013: Submission deadline for research papers (papers up to 5 pages) or presentations (2 page abstract) or workshop proposals (up to 2 page description).
  • 30th June 2013: Submission deadline for posters (1 page abstract).

Loss of Three UK Health Informatics Colleagues in 2012

We regret to report that three UK health informatics colleagues passed away in 2012 – John Bryden, Derek Hoy and Denis Barnett.

Dr John S Bryden passed away a few months before his 80th birthday. He was well-known in the UK, and especially Scottish, health informatics communities, as well as contributing to many international activities, especially at the European level. EFMI have a tribute to his work on the EFMI website; he was their Executive Officer for 10 years, and helped make many EFMI events a success. He was, for many years, a key member of the British Computer Society health groups, and was closely involved in the organisation of Medinfo2001. An appreciation also appears in the The Herald (Scotland) news site. The BCS Health Forum will be compiling a reflection on his and Derek’s life and work; please contact Dr Paul Woolman (paul.woolman[at]nhs.net) is you wish to contribute.

Derek Hoy passed away in November 2012 after a short illness. He was well-known in the international nursing informatics community, and was active for many years. Colleagues have developed a crowdsourced chronology of his life and activities at https://hackpad.com/Some-memories-of-Derek-Hoy-6dAorTkGiEP Derek was actively involved in the European Summer School s in Nursing Informatics, in work on nursing information systems, and was involved in the EU-funded NIGHTINGALE project. Derek was also an accomplished musician, and a member of the Scottish Malt Whisky Society. Denise Barnett was  long-standing and active member of the BCS Nursing Specialist Group; she passed away in November 2012, after being ill for some time. She was the Editor of ITIN, the journal of the BCS Nursing Group for many years., participated in many international nursing informatics events, and edited the ‘Intwernational Nursing Informatics’ 40 year history, published in 2000 and authored by Maureen Scholes, Marianne Tallberg and Elly Pluyter-Wenting.  In recent years, together with Glyn Hayes, she edited the BCS Health Informatics History Book.

The successful candidate will lead and contribute to several established programmes of research within the Centre and provide input to both its teaching and strategic direction.  There will be a requirement to attract significant research income, to produce high quality, high impact outputs and to develop the profile of the Centre on a global scale.

Surrey Informatics Summer School (SISS-2013): June 30 – July 06, 2013

The 2013 Surrey Clinical Informatics Summer School (SISS-2013) will be held 30th June to 6th July 2013 at University of Surrey. The course is being organised by the Clinical Informatics and Health Outcomes research group; part of the Department of Health Care Management and Policy. The course is being held at the University of Surrey’s parkland campus – good quality accommodation is available a short walk from the new Surrey Sports Park for residential students. SSIS-2013 follows on from  a very successful first event in 2012 that attracted participants from as far afield as Canada and Saudi Arabia.

The course runs for a full day with plenary taught sessions at the start and the end of the day; individual computer lab working in the second half of the morning and group scenario-based learning activities in the afternoon.  The course covers the range of skills needs to process routine health data.  The course is designed to meet the needs of an international audience. They will have a PhD or MD (or equivalent) in a science or engineering subject relevant to Health Informatics, plus significant demonstrable research experience, or a higher degree in a science or engineering subject relevant to Health Informatics plus significant and relevant industrial/healthcare experience.
