4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics: Dubai, UAE – 22-24 April, 2013

The 4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics, with the theme “Applied Health Informatics: A Regional Trend or a Priority?” will be held on 22 – 24 April 2013 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The event is being organised by the Middle East Association for Health Informatics (MEAHI – www.meahi.org), which brings together IMIA members in the region.

Information on the Call for Submissions is on the MEAHI website – the deadline for submissions is 01 March, 2013.

This is the fourth periodical health informatics conference in the Middle East region since October 2002; which is bringing together healthcare professionals and stakeholders from across the Middle East region working at strategic, managerial and operational levels in Governments, Academia, and Industry in healthcare domain. The conference aims to explore further the role of informatics in healthcare , and pragmatic informatics-driven approaches to enhance healthcare quality services based on regional needs and an inspired strategy : “Better Health Through Better Information”. Themes will include ‘From eHealth policy to practice’, education and research, public health informatics, clinical informatics, and nursing informatics.

PAHO/WHO Launches “eHealth Conversations” in the Americas

The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is launching a series of “eHealth Conversations”, which will be virtual dialogues addressing the present and future of eHealth in the Americas, and calls on professionals to participate in this project. Professionals working in the field of eHealth are invited to brainstorm, discuss and reflect on the present and future of the use and application of information and communication technologies in public health in the Americas. The virtual dialogues will be part of a project titled “eHealth Conversations: Information management, dialogue and knowledge exchange to approach universal access to health”.

Based on the components of the eHealth regional strategy, PAHO/WHO will implement a series of virtual dialogues with key stakeholders, networks and experts in the following topics: 1) Infrastructure, 2) Information Systems, 3) Telemedicine, 4) Access to information, 5) Policies, 6) Education, 7) Patient Safety, 8) Electronic Medical Records, 9) Standards for interoperability, 10) Legal issues, 11) Relationship with projects and initiatives of e-Government, and 12) eHealth Management.

Each virtual dialogue will begin during the week of October 15, 2012, and will last 120 days. The main goal of each conversation is to develop a situation analysis, identify national and international experts and networks in each topic, and produce conclusions and recommendations for PAHO/WHO and its member countries to consider when implementing eHealth projects.

New EFMI Board, Honorary Fellows

Following the recent successful MIE2012 conference in Pisa, Italy, the new membership of the EFMI (European Federation for Medical Informatics) Board has been announced. See the website at www.efmi.org for full information.

Patrick Weber (Switzerland) is now EFMI President, Lacramioara Stoicu-Tividar (Romania) is EFMI Secretary and Etienne De Clercq (Belgium) is EFMI Treasurer. Anne Moen (Norway) is EFMI Vice President and John Mantas (Greece), as EFMI and IMIA Vice President for Europe, will represent EFMI at the IMIA Board.

Other Board members are:

  • Alexander Hörbst – EFMI Press and Information Officer
  • György Surjan – EFMI Publication Officer
  • Stig Kjaer Andersen – EFMI Executive Officer
  • Christian Lovis – EFMI Institutions Liaison Officer

In a news item on the EFMI website, John Mantas also writes that:
“George Mihalas, Rolf Engelbrecht, and Jacob Hofdijk to be elected as Honorary Fellows, the highest honour of our Federation … Being Fellows in EFMI means that their presence in the Council meetings will continue to assist EFMI in future.”

He notes, among other achievements and contributions, that George Mihalas has in many positions, including that of President, and well-known for  extending EFMI relations with all other regions outside Europe; Rolf Engelbrecht has worked for many years in EFMI, as well as being coordinator of many European projects and initiatives, and initiator of the STC conferences; Jacob Hofdijk is well-known for his innovative ideas and support for more professional organisation of EFMI to provide services to its members.

HELINA Relaunches Website

HELINA, IMIA’s African region, has relaunched its website. The new site is at http://www.helina-online.org

HELINA – Health Informatics in Africa – has at present the objectives:

  • to get African countries to develop their National Health Informatics Societies so that they can qualify to join the World of Health Informatics by becoming a member of IMIA. This step will make them automatic members of HELINA.
  • to develop education and research programs adapted to the African context, fostering alliance with government and the private sector, and
  • to develop a strategic plan for the sustainable development of Health Informatics and e-health in Africa.

The following eight African Member Societies that are full members of IMIA:

  • AHIN, Association for Health Informatics of Nigeria
  • ATIM-TELEMED, Togolese Association of Medical Informatics and Telemedicine
  • CAHIS, Cameroonian Health Informatics Society
  • EHIA, Ethiopian Health informatics Association
  • ISBHI, Ivorian Society of Biosciences and Health Informatics
  • MIAM, Medical Informatics Association of Malawi
  • SAHIA, South African Health Informatics Association
  • SOMIBS, The Mali Society of Biomedical and Health Information

Corresponding members are also from Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The new HELINA website has information on HELINA membership, Board members, conferences, and other related activities. The Regional VP to IMIA for HELINA is Mr. Ghislain Kouematchoua Tchuithceu.

IMIA-LAC Website New Look

IMIA-LAC, the Latin American and Caribbean Federation of Health Informatics (Federación de Informática Médica para América Latina y el Caribe) has re-launched its website with a new design and structure – www.imia-lac.net The site will grow to provide more information about IMIA-LAC, its Member Associations and other contacts, and about activities within the region.

Currently, there are seven IMIA Member Societies constituting IMIA-LAC:

  • Asociación Argentina de Informática Médica (AAIM)
  • Sociedade Brasileira de Informática em Saúde (SBIS)
  • Asociación Chilena de Informática en Salud (ACHISA)
  • Sociedad Cubana de Informatica Medica (SOCIM)
  • Asociación Mexicana de Informática Médica (AMIM)
  • Sociedad Uruguaya de Informática en la Salud (SUIS)
  • Asociación Venezolana de Informática en Salud (AVIS)

Additionally, there are contacts in Colombia and Peru, and several Working Groups. Dr. Carola Hullin Lucay Cossio is current IMIA-LAC President, and contact can be made via the form on the IMIA-LAC website.

IMIA-LAC Leadership Changes

IMIA-LAC (IMIA Latin America and Caribbean) leaders and members held their AGM during Medinfo2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. The new Board, elected for the period 2010-2013, comprises:

Dr. Carola Hullin Lucay Cossio, President (Chile);
Dr. Amado Espinosa, Secretary (Mexico);
Dr. Osmán Arguello, Treasurer (Venezuela).
