Reminder: Medinfo2013 Tutorials Programme Announced – Sign Up by 12 June

The Medinfo2013 SPC and LOC are pleased to announce a programme of 23 high quality, half-day tutorials, to be held on 19 and 20 August, 2013. The 23 half day tutorials are organized in tracks, making Medinfo2013 an excellent chance for those who wish to be introduced to new topics, get new inspiration and broaden their network within topics of interest. The program is available on the Medinfo2013 website, directly at

The fee is being kept as low as possible for those who are already registered for Medinfo2013 (emails are being sent today to all registrants). The tutorials are also open for others at a higher fee. [NOTE: Tutorials have to be paid as EXTRA, and are not included the main Medinfo2013 fee.] The LOC encourage everyone to please register as soon as possible. The deadline for registration for tutorials is June 12; after this date, the SPC and LOC may have to cancel some of the planned tutorials if insufficient people have signed up for them.

The programme of tutorials addresses diverse topics, including Clinical Decision Support (several tutorials addressing various aspects), national eHealth strategies, openEHR clinical content models, implementation of telemedicine services in rural areas, data mining in clinical applications, eHealth and mHealth evaluations, user-centered design for public health and consumer health informatics, the Chief Medical Information Officer role, fundamentals of clinical and translational research informatics, and ethical issues in health informatics.

Medinfo2013: Student paper Finalists Announced; Regular Registration Rate Closes 15 June

One announcement and one reminder from the Medinfo2013 SPC and LOC.

The Student Paper Finalists have been selected and details are on the Medinfo2013 website:  We hope that everyone will support the work of these and other students, and help to nurture the next generation.  Results of the competition will be decided after presentations at Medinfo2013.

The ‘Regular Rate’ for Medinfo2013 closes on 15 June – see for information on registration and rates. If you have not already registered, we encourage you to do so soon, to avoid higher rates as the event gets nearer.

111 days to Medinfo2013 – Visa Letters and Other Issues

According to the IMIA office iPad, there are now just 111 days until the official opening of Medinfo2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark on 20 August, 2013.

The 14th World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics – Medinfo2013 – will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is hosted by the Danish Society of Medical Informatics. We look forward to seeing as many colleagues as possible there, and encourage you to register as soon as possible and ‘spread the word’ among your friends, colleagues and organisations.

The LOC and PCO ask that we draw your attention to a couple of issues – making sure yo apply for visa letters if needed, and that if you wish a paper/hard copy of the proceedings, you will need to order it at additional cost. New Trends in Health Social Media: Hype or Evidence-based Medicine? (Medinfo Panel)

Members of the IMIA Social Media Working Group seek input and interaction form all those interested in addressing the title/topic of their Medinfo2013 panel – “New Trends in Health Social Media: Hype or Evidence-based Medicine?” Luis Fernandez-Luque, IMIA Social Media WG Secretary, writes:

In order to allow interaction with the health social media community we will post a series of blog entries about the different topics addressed in our panel. What do you think? Is Social media Hype or Evidence-based Medicine? Where do you think the research is going? What are your thoughts?

The panel summary states: “The use of social media in the health domain is growing continuously in the terms of use and also complexity. This panel will provide and overview of the current situation and the challenges ahead. The presenters will provide an engaging discussion rooted in the evidence of the emerging field of Health Social Media. Among other topics the following aspects will be addressed: gamification, personalized medicine, patient safety and other topics that will be discussed in the panel.”

Francophone SIG pre-symposium at Medinfo2013 (Session francophone d’informatique médicale)

The IMIA Francophone SIG is organising a French-speaking scientific track as a pre-symposium associated with the Medinfo2013 conference ( on August 20th, 2013.

Further details of the Call for Submissions can be found below in French – and on the SIG website at The deadline for submission is April 5, 2013. The call spans the MEDINFO topics, with special emphasis on issues specific to Francophone countries or which involve the processing of French language.

Submission format uses the same stylesheet as MEDINFO.  Both long (5 pages) and short (2 pages, work in progress) papers are solicited. The paper submission URL is:

Context Sensitive Health Informatics Pre-Medinfo2013 Conference: Submissions Now Due 08 February

Prof. Marie-Catherine Beuscart-Zéphir (Past Vice Chair), and Prof. Christian Nøhr (Chair of the IMIA Human Factors Engineering for Healthcare Informatics Working Group) wish to announce that the Call for Papers is available for the “Context Sensitive Health Informatics” event, a pre-Medinfo conference jointly organized/supported by several IMIA WG (Human Factors Engineering for Healthcare Informatics, Organizational and Social Issues, Health Informatics for Patient Safety).

The event will be held on 17 and 18 August, 2013 at the Danish Institute for Medical Simulation at Herlev Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Call for papers – deadline EXTENDED TO 08 FEBRUARY
Context Sensitive Health Informatics is about health information technologies and their environments. Environments may be people in different roles such as users, designers, and evaluators, but also nonhuman constructs such as organizations, work practices, guidelines and protocols, buildings and markets. We invite original contributions addressing the conference topic.

IMIA Award of Excellence 2013 – Nominations Invited

IMIA invites nominations for the fourth IMIA Award of Excellence, to be presented at Medinfo2013 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The closing date will be 10 March, 2013, and nominations must be received by the IMIA CEO (by email to imia[at] by that date. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

The primary criterion for a potential recipient of the IMIA Award of Excellence is “an individual whose personal commitment and dedication to medical informatics has made a lasting contribution to medicine and healthcare through her or his achievements in research, education, development or application in the field of medical informatics.”

Nominations have no specific format, but must include sufficient information and supporting details about the nominee to both demonstrate how they meet the primary criterion and allow their nomination to be judged against others. They should contain, at a minimum:

  • a one page summary of the nominee’s most important accomplishments/contributions;
  • a current CV; and
  • 2-3 letters of support from named referees, or nominator and seconders.

The IMIA Award of Excellence committee for 2013 (as approved by the 2012 IMIA GA meeting in Beijing):

  • IMIA President Antoine Geissbuhler (chair, Switzerland)
  • IMIA VP Medinfo Riccardo Bellazzi (Italy)
  • R Brian Haynes (Canada)
  • Hyeoun-Ae Park (South Korea)

The IMIA Award of Excellence Committee will consider nominations and make a recommendation on the Award winner(s), and submit this to the IMIA Board for ratification at its April 2013 meeting. The recommendation of the IMIA Board will be final. As part of the Award, IMIA will provide funding support to the recipient(s) to attend Medinfo2013 to receive the Award.
