Medinfo2010 – 200 days to go and other updates

There are now only 200 days to go the start of Medinfo2010 in Cape Town, South Africa ( – at least, that is what the app on my iPod Touch tells me, and Wolfram Alpha concurs.

Many of you will have been receiving emails in the last 7-10 days about the outcomes of your submissions to the scientific programme. Congratulations to those who have had their submissions accepted, and commiserations to those who have not been as successful. We hope that, whatever the outcome, many of you will now be making your plans to attend, and IMIA look forward to welcoming many friends and colleagues, old and new, to this, the first African Medinfo.

Remember that the closing date for early bird registration is 28 February.

You can follow all the latest news updates on the Medinfo2010 website; you can also follow on Twitter – @medinfo2010

We have also set up a Medinfo2010 event page for those who use Facebook >>> – sign up to the event page and let us know you plans, and what you want to get out of, and will be putting into, Medinfo2010. Hopefully, the event page, and other forms of virtual interaction that we and others will be developing, will allow those who cannot be in Cape Town to have some interaction.

Happy Medinfo2010 and other miscellania

As we start 2010, we hope that many of you will now be making your plans in earnest to attend Medinfo2010 ( – which starts in 255 days time on 12 September, 2010. We know that many of you are waiting for the outcomes of the review process for your scientific submissions; the SPC meets in early February, and are hoping to have notifications sent out around mid February. The closing date for early bird registrations is 28 February.

In making your plans, do not forget that the IMIA Board and General Assembly meetings will be held on September 11 and 12 respectively in Cape Town, South Africa.

The regular monthly IMIA email bulletins will continue to be sent out in the first few days of each month – the first will be on 04 January.

We will be continuing to develop new communication and interaction services in 2010, for the benefit of IMIA members and the wider informatics community. The ‘IMIA Health Informatics Bundle’ RSS feed (>>>) has been refined, adding JAMIA’s ‘latest issue’ feed and AMIA’s News Releases feed. These will be further fine-tuned, and probably split into a journals feed and a general health informatics feed. We welcome suggestions for journals or other relevant feeds that readers think should added.

2010 will also see more conferences and other events as our domain grows; we will continue to provide information about events, and Calls for Submissions.

IMIA Health Information Systems WG event – Sept. 2010

Christian Lovis, chair of the IMIA Health Information Systems Working Group (IMIA HIS WG), has announced that the WG will be organising a two day workshop on Health Information Systems – 30 Years of Evolution, that will take place just before the Medinfo 2010 Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.

Christian notes that 2010 is a very important date for the IMIA Health Information Systems (HIS) WG, and Cape Town a very special place. In 1979, the first HIS working conference was held in Cape Town, South Africa. As a result of that conference the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) created a working group on hospital information systems. That working group has since organised a series of working conferences (Nijmegen, Gottingen, Durham, Heidelberg) of which the proceedings have been published.

As the next World Congress on Medical Informatics, Medinfo, will take place in September 2010 in Cape Town (, this offers a unique opportunity to have another HIS working conference in conjunction with Medinfo where the evolution over a 30-year period can be discussed and challenges for the coming decade identified.

The event is scheduled to be held on September 10-12, 2010 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Further details will be advised in due course.

At the two-day conference, several of the pioneers in the field will be present, together with new talent; there will be three plenary sessions, discussion groups and invited speakers, and the outcomes of the conference will be reported during a panel at Medinfo.
