IMIA Board Meeting – Dubai, UAE 21 April

The IMIA Board met in Dubai, UAE on 21 April in conjunction with the 4th MEAHI conference. This was the first meeting in the region. There will be reports to follow. Many Board members will be speaking at the MEAHI conference in the coming days – www.meahi.org  Carol Hullin (IMIA-LAC VP) and Chris Lehmann (VP Services) were not physically present, but participated remotely for their reports.

April Events Highlights – MEAHI and EFMI Conferences

Two important regional conferences take place in April, 2013 – the 4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics, to be held in Dubai, UAE on 22-24 April – and the EFMI Special Topic Conference (STC), to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 17-19 April. Please watch for further updates here, or on the event websites, as they draw closer. We encourage colleagues to attend these events.

The 4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics – Dubai, UAE: The conference theme is “Applied Health Informatics: A Regional Trend or a Priority?” and this event will be held on 22 – 24 April 2013 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The event is being organised by the Middle East Association for Health Informatics (MEAHI – www.meahi.org), which brings together IMIA members in the region. In addition to the conference itself, which features keynote talks, peer-reviewed papers, workshops and other activity, there will be the MEAHI General Assembly meeting and the launch of the MEAHI Nursing Informatics group. Registration for the event is still open.

UPDATE, 15 APRIL: The MEAHI General Assembly meeting will be held on 23 April (4.20-6pm) at the Crowne Plaza Deira Hotel, Dubai, UAE. The conference programme is available on the MEAHI website – http://www.meahi.org/#!conference-program/clhv

The EFMI STC 2013 – Prague, Czech Republic: The Czech Society of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Informatics and the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI) are pleased to invite you to participate in the next EFMI Special Topic Conference (STC) “Data and Knowledge for Medical Decision Support”. It will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on April 17 – 19, 2013. Keynote speakers are Prof. Marion Ball and Prof. Jan van Bemmel.

IMIA Regional Events, April 2013: EFMI in Prague, and MEAHI in Dubai

EFMI STC 2013 – Prague, Czech Republic:  The Czech Society of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Informatics and the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI) are pleased to invite you to participate at the next EFMI Special Topic Conference (STC) “Data and Knowledge for Medical Decision Support”. It will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on April 17 – 19, 2013. The EFMI STC 2013 is continuing the series of successful EFMI STC conferences. It is one of the most important European events in the domains of biomedicine including health care and informatics covering information science and technology. Conference registration is open.

4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics: Dubai, UAE – 22-24 April, 2013

The 4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics, with the theme “Applied Health Informatics: A Regional Trend or a Priority?” will be held on 22 – 24 April 2013 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The event is being organised by the Middle East Association for Health Informatics (MEAHI – www.meahi.org), which brings together IMIA members in the region.

Information on the Call for Submissions is on the MEAHI website – the deadline for submissions is 01 March, 2013.

This is the fourth periodical health informatics conference in the Middle East region since October 2002; which is bringing together healthcare professionals and stakeholders from across the Middle East region working at strategic, managerial and operational levels in Governments, Academia, and Industry in healthcare domain. The conference aims to explore further the role of informatics in healthcare , and pragmatic informatics-driven approaches to enhance healthcare quality services based on regional needs and an inspired strategy : “Better Health Through Better Information”. Themes will include ‘From eHealth policy to practice’, education and research, public health informatics, clinical informatics, and nursing informatics.

Saudi eHealth Conference 2010 – May 2-4, Riyadh

The Saudi Association for Health Informatics Conference, with the theme Applied Health Informatics, will be held on 2-4 May, 2010. Full information on the event, including the list of speakers, is available at http://www.saudiehealth.org The venue will be the King Faisal Conference Hall (Intercontinental Hotel), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together both healthcare providers and information technologists to empower the advancements in the delivery, quality, and continuity of health care. The conference’s strong ties to The Saudi Association for Health Informatics (SAHI) and healthcare communities offer abundant opportunities for interaction and collaboration along with the National E-health initiative as guided by the Saudi Ministry of Health. The conference will be under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Mugren Bin Abdulaziz, the President of the General Intelligence and the Honorary Chairman of the Saudi Association for Health Informatics (SAHI).

The Saudi Association for Health Informatics (SAHI) is an IMIA member society, and IMIA is pleased to support this important event as a partner, and will be providing a number of speakers.

Third Middle East Conference of Health Informatics

The Third Middle East Conference of Health Informatics, organised by the Lebanese Medical Informatics Association (www.lmia.org), and held in collaboration with MEAHI, IMIA’s newly established Middle East Association for Health Informatics, will be held in Beirut, Lebanon on 31 March to 01 April, 2010.

The conference theme is Interoperability in Healthcare: Role of Biomedical & Health Informatics, and scheduled presenters include Prof.Reinhold Haux, President, International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), Dr Ramin Moghaddam, President, Middle East Association for Health Informatics (MEAHI), and Dr. Hala Badreddine, President, Lebanese Medical Informatics Association (LMIA).

MEAHI – a new IMIA region

A new IMIA regional group was formally approved by the IMIA General Assembly at its recent meeting in Hiroshima, Japan. MEAHI – the Middle East Association for Health Informatics – will fill a gap in IMIA’s global coverage, and has been established after much hard work, in particular by Prof. Hiroshi Takeda, IMIA’s VP for Special Affairs and Dr Ramin Moghaddam (President of the Iranian Medical Informatics Association – IrMIA).

A number of events have been held in the past few years as build-up to the formation of the new IMIA region, including meetings in Dubai, Lebanon, Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. MEAHI will be  a professional association to advance and advocate the use of information and  communication technologies at every level in the delivery of healthcare and medical services in the Middle East region, especially in the countries in which the WHO regional office for the Eastern Mediterranean (WHO-EMRO).

The new MEAHI region will be formally welcomed at a ceremony at Medinfo2010. Dr Ramin Moghaddam was approved as the first president of MEAHI, and will be its regional representative to the IMIA Board.
