JAMIA Seeks Student Editorial Board Applications – Due February 15

As announced through the recent AMIA e-News, JAMIA (http://jamia.bmj.com) is seeking applications from biomedical informatics trainees for positions on the Student Editorial Board (SEB). Details about this program may be found in a published editorial in JAMIA. A goal of the program is to improve all of these skills through experience and mentorship, and several full JAMIA Editorial Board members initially served as SEB members during their training. SEB members will be assigned up to 6 manuscripts per year to review. More information is also available on http://www.amia.org/jamia-student-editorial-board

Nancy Lorenzi to Receive AMIA’s Morris F Collen Award 2012

AMIA has announced the names of its ‘AMIA Signature Awards’ for 2012; the formal awards will all be made at the forthcoming AMIA Annual Symposium in Chicago.

Past IMIA President (2004-07) Prof. Nancy Lorenzi is the recipient of the Morris F Collen Award of Excellence, AMIA’s highest award. Many congratulations to Nancy on this award; we will provide further update after AMIA2012.

Call for Proposals: AMIA Joint Summits on Translational Science

The AMIA Joint Summits on Translational Science will be held on March 18-22, 2013, in San Francisco, CA, USA. See http://www.amia.org/jointsummits2013 for full information

The Call for Proposals is open, and the Scientific Program Committee (SPC) solicits papers on the state-of-the-art in translational bioinformatics and clinical research informatics. All proposals must be submitted through the AMIA submission sites in accordance with the following deadlines:

• Paper Proposals Due: September 27, 2012
• Panels, Posters, and Podium Abstract Proposal Due: October 11, 2012

You are advised to please review the Types of Proposals guidelines prior to submission (http://www.amia.org/jointsummits2013/proposals-types). Translational Bioinformatics focuses on applications of bioinformatics innovations in the context of human health and disease, and touches nearly all areas of biological, biomedical, and clinical research. The CRI Summit will immediately follow the Summit on Translational Bioinformatics (TBI) which will afford participants the unique opportunity to see the latest developments in clinical research informatics from academia, industry and government. The TBI and CRI Summits serve as the primary forum for exchange of ideas, issues, and science in clinical and translational research informatics.

AMIA 2012 Symposium – Full Schedule Available

The AMIA 2012 Annual Symposium takes place in Chicago on November 3-7, and offers a unique multi-disciplinary approach to informatics science and practice.  Full information, including the online schedule, itinerary planner, etc are available via http://www.amia.org/amia2012 Registration is open, with advance rates expiring on 04 October. The 2012 event is expected to be the biggest ever, with over 670 papers, posters, panels, tutorials, etc., and with more than 2,400 participants expected.

NI2012 Congress Begins on June 23. Still Time to Register.

Time is running out to register for NI2012, the premier nursing informatics conference, to be held on June 23-27 in Montreal, Canada. See www.ni2012.org

AMIA Names Kevin Fickenscher, MD, as New President and CEO

AMIA (www.amia.org) announced yesterday (15 March) that its Board of Directors will be appointing Kevin Fickenscher, MD as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Dr. Fickenscher will be replacing Ted Shortliffe, MD, PhD; he will join AMIA on March 19, 2012 and will officially start in the role on April 01, 2012.

In a letter to AMIA members, Board Chair Gil Kuperman noted that “Kevin has had a distinguished career in health care and information technology. As a result of his previous senior management roles, he brings to AMIA skills and experience in leadership, leadership development, strategic planning, organizational transformation, business development, policy development and clinical quality improvement.” AMIA members will be able to meet Kevin at the Translational Bioinformatics / Clinical Research Informatics Joint Summits in San Francisco on 19-23 March – http://www.amia.org/jointsummits2012

Bursary reminder:

The organizers of NI2012 are pleased to announce that limited bursary reimbursement funds are available, to assist individuals with travel to the NI2012 Congress. The bursary fund has been established to provide partial travel support for authors and students who can demonstrate a financial need to attend NI2012. Full information is available on the NI2012 website at http://www.ni2012.org/financial-support

The deadline for applications is April 2, 2012. Successful candidates will be notified by April 16, 2012. To apply, submit an application letter to Jeff Williamson, AMIA’s Vice President of Education and Academic Affairs, by email to jeff[at]amia.org Include a statement of need along with estimates of costs in United States Dollars; in addition, you will need to follow the other instructions and eligibility criteria.

Submission Deadlines: Medicine 2.0’12 and AMIA 2012

Two important conference submission deadlines are upon us within the next few days. If you are intending to submit either an abstract to the Medicine 2.0’12 conference, or a proposal to the AMIA 2012 Annual Symposium, then time is running out.

Medicine 2.0’12 – extended deadline now March 14. The Call for Abstracts, Presentations, Interactive Demos, Tabletop (Tradeshow) Presentation, Startup Pitches and Panel Proposal was extended and will now close on March 14. Medicine 2.0 ’12, aka the 5th World Congress on Social Media, Mobile Apps, and Internet/Web2.0 in Health and Medicine, this year hosted in Boston at Harvard Medical School, will once again be very international and contain a unique mix of traditional academic/research, practice and business presentations, keynote presentations, and panel discussions to discuss emerging technologies in health and medicine, with an emphasis on Internet-based, social media, and mobile technologies. Early bird registration is open.

IMIA supports this conference and the IMIA Medicine 2.0 Award will be administered by the IMIA Social Media Working Group.

AMIA 2012 – the Call for Proposals closes on March 15. AMIA 2012 submissions will be categorized as either foundational contributions of novel informatics methods, or as reports of the application of informatics in the biomedical sciences or the day-to-day practice of health care.
