87th Annual AHIMA Conference and Exhibit – Submission Deadline Now December 15, 2014

AHIMA (www.ahima.org) cordially invites you to submit your contribution to the 2015 American Health Information Management (AHIMA) Annual Convention; the event will be held on September 26-30, 2015 in New Orleans, USA. The Call for Participation is intended to highlight the diverse interests and areas that broadly constitute the fields of Health Information Management and Health Informatics. The AHIMA Annual Convention offers health information management and health informatics practitioners, educators, students, and researchers the opportunity to share their expertise and insights and to disseminate their research, findings and recommendations. For 2015, AHIMA seeks submissions describing health information management and health informatics research and analytical approaches as well as the day to day practice and application of health information management and health informatics. The conference provides a venue for forward looking, thought-provoking, and groundbreaking discussions. The educational sessions at AHIMA 2015 are designed to offer training, information, and updates on issues vital to health information management and health informatics in the context of an ever changing and often challenging environment.

AHIMA will organize accepted submissions into selected tracks and themes. Individual submissions that are not selected for presentations or panels may be invited to participate in the Poster or other related Networking of CEU events. The sessions will help practitioners identify and embrace best practices, leverage lessons learned, and adopt state-of-the-art solutions; allow educators and students to stay up to date on current advancements; and help regulators and policymakers make sound decisions about health information management and health informatics. Some sessions will emphasize conceptual and theoretical advances relating to the structure, collection, processing, management, maintenance and use of health data. These sessions will present analysis, innovation, and research on the fundamental underpinnings of health information management and health informatics.

Please submit a formal proposal to be considered as a speaker in the pre-convention tutorials, convention educational sessions (presentations and panels) or to have a graphic presentation featured in the Poster Showcase.

AHIMA/IFHIMA Seeking Applications for Global Workforce Council (GHWC)

The U.S. Department of Commerce is supporting the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA – http://www.ahima.org/) and its partner the International Federation of Health Information Management Associations (IFHIMA – http://www.ifhima.org/) in an initiative to establish a global health information curricula and competency standard that provides a framework for healthcare and education systems worldwide to update and or build a workforce strategy.

The first step to advance a health information education and workforce training standard is establishing a Global Workforce Council (GHWC). The GHWC will oversee the development of an internationally applicable curricula and competency standard in HIM, HI and HIT. The standard will be developed in an open and transparent manner that engages countries and experts internationally.

The GHWC will consist of thirteen appointed members with a cross section of expertise from around the globe. Eleven representatives will be recruited from the six IFHIMA/WHO regions and from select target countries. AHIMA, the AHIMA Foundation and IFHIMA are seeking applicants for the GHWC positions. They are seeking council candidates who have demonstrated leadership in the healthcare and/or education system, and who possess recognition and influence within their country or region and the ability to gain support for the health information curricula standard with various stakeholder groups. Council members will participate in the development and dissemination of the curricula/competency standard through regular conference calls (e.g. monthly initially and then less frequently over time) and one face to face meeting per year. Council appointments are for 2-3 years.

IMIA has been involved in the planning team to bring the work to this stage, and we ask you to distribute this to your colleagues and others to help in identifying and inviting potential candidates for the Council from the six IFHIMA/WHO regions – Africa, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, South East Asia, and Western Pacific and from select target countries including Brazil, India and the GCC

The use of health information technology products and services is growing globally as countries innovate their healthcare system to improve care/outcomes and reduce costs. All healthcare systems, regardless of how well financed or organized, need sufficient numbers of well-trained and highly skilled workers to implement and manage long-term their health information and technology systems. To address the changing needs for a skilled workforce, a comprehensive education and workforce strategy is needed for health information management (HIM), health informatics (HI) and health information technology (HIT). Many of the technology requirements (e.g., electronic health records), standards (e.g., Health Level 7), and terminologies (e.g., SNOMED, ICD-10) are global in nature supporting the need for a defined set of competencies for HIM, HI and HIT workers globally.

The attached document [download] provides more information about the GHWC and an application form that can be used by applicants. Applications are due on April 4, 2014 and should be submitted by e-mail to info[at]ahimafoundation.org. Council applications will be reviewed by a multi-stakeholder nominating committee comprised of members from various associations and countries. Council members will be selected by mid April. If you have questions please contact Michelle Dougherty from the AHIMA Foundation at michelle.dougherty[at]ahimafoundation.org (do NOT contact IMIA with queries or applications).
