STARE-HI – IMIA endorsed document on evaluation in health informatics
From time to time, IMIA’s Working Groups, Special Interest Groups, Working Conferences and other activities develop position papers, guidelines and other documents which are considered to be of significant interest and use to the global health and biomedical informatics community. These are then approved by the IMIA General Assembly as IMIA endorsed documents.
The most recent is STARE-HI (Statement on Reporting of Evaluation Studies in Health Informatics), authored by Jan Talmon, Elske Ammenwerth, Jytte Brender, Nicolette de Keizer, Pirkko Nykänen and Michael Rigby. This aims to provide guidelines for, and so improve the quality of, evaluation reports and studies in health informatics. IMIA’s Technology Assessment and Quality Development Working Group was responsible for IMIA’s contribution to the development of STARE-HI, which also had input from EFMI’s Assessment of Health Information Systems Working Group and AMIA’s Evaluation Working Group.
The final document is available on the IMIA website on the IMIA Endorsed Documents page. It has also been published in the International Journal of Medical Informatics 2009 (78(1), 1-9 – doi:10.1016/j.ijmedinf.2008.09.02) and in the IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics 2009 (Yearb Med Inform 2009:23-31).
IMIA endorsed the STARE-HI document at its General Assembly meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden in May 2008. It has also been endorsed by EFMI (May 2007, Brijuni, Croatia) and by AMIA’s Working Group on Evaluation (2007).
Other IMIA Endorsed Documents are the Recommendations of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) on Education in Health and Medical Informatics (1999 – currently being updated), the Medical Informatics Scientific Content Map (2002 version) and the IMIA Code of Ethics for Health Informatics Professionals (http://www.imia.org/ethics.lasso).
