More Events for the Merry Month of May
At least three important events take place in May, 2013 – two in Canada, one in Austria. We hope that many IMIA colleagues will be able to participate in and support at least one of them (we know not everyone can get to every event), and we wish the organisers every success.
The 17th IFHIMA (International Federation of Health Information Management Associations) Congress will be held on May 13-15, 2013, in Montréal, Québec, Canada. See www.ifhimacongress2013.com The venue will be the Palais des congrès de Montréal, located in the heart of downtown Montréal. CHIMA (Canadian Health Information Management Association – http://www.echima.ca) will be hosting the event, and the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA – www.cnia.ca) is also partnering in the event. IFHIMA (http://www.ifhima.org) is an Affiliate Member of IMIA, and IMIA is pleased to be able to participate in the IFHIMA General Assembly meeting to be held on 12 May in conjunction with the Congress.
COACH (Canada’s Health Informatics Association – www.coachorg.com) will be holding their annual e-Health conference in Ottawa, Canada on 26-29 May (venue the Ottawa Convention Centre). The theme is Accelerating Change, and full details are at www.e-healthconference.com There is a conference blog at www.e-healthconference.com/blog In addition to pre-conference workshops, there will also be the Canadian Telehealth Forum, and plenary sessions on ‘Big Data and Quality in Healthcare’ and ‘The Consumerization of e-Health’. eHealth 2013 (not to be confused by COACH’s similarly named event) will take place in Vienna, Austria on 23-24 May, 2013. It is the annual event of IMIA Member Society, the Working Group Medical Informatics and eHealth of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) and the Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering (ÖGBMT) (Arbeitskreis Medizinische Informatik (AKMI) der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Biomedizinische Technik (ÖGBMT) und der Österreichischen Computergesellschaft (OCG) ). eHealth Week 2013: New Technologies, New Ideas, New Opportunities
eHealth Week 2013 (May 13 – 15) will be held at the Convention Centre Dublin, and bring together global decision makers from European public and private healthcare, to join High Level European Ministers and EU Commissioners and over 2,500 international delegates and 100 exhibitors. eHealth Week is co-organised by the European Commission, the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and HIMSS Europe.
Working with the European Commission, the Irish Department of Health, the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the ECH Alliance, the theme of this year’s event will focus on delivering innovation and well-being. eHealth Week will show the importance of cooperation, communication and Connected Health best-practice.

Major Events for 2014: NI2014 and MIE2014
Initial announcements have been made about two important events on the global health, nursing and biomedical informatics calendar for 2014. Further information will be given soon on important timelines, so please keep an eye on the relevant websites; IMIA will also be helping to promote both events.
NI2014 – the 12th International Congress of Nursing Informatics will take place in Taipei (at the Taipei International Convention Center, near to the famous Taipei 101) on 21-25 June, 2014. Initial information is available on the conference website – see http://www.ni2014.org We encourage all nursing and nursing informatics colleagues (and others) to participate.
MIE2014 – the 25th European Medical Informatics Conference – will be held in Istanbul on 31 August – 03 September, 2014. Information will be available on the conference website at http://www.mie2014.org and on the EFMI web portal at http://www.efmi.org We look forward to seeing many colleagues from Europe and further afield at this event.
April Events Highlights – MEAHI and EFMI Conferences
Two important regional conferences take place in April, 2013 – the 4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics, to be held in Dubai, UAE on 22-24 April – and the EFMI Special Topic Conference (STC), to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 17-19 April. Please watch for further updates here, or on the event websites, as they draw closer. We encourage colleagues to attend these events.
The 4th Middle East Conference on Healthcare Informatics – Dubai, UAE: The conference theme is “Applied Health Informatics: A Regional Trend or a Priority?” and this event will be held on 22 – 24 April 2013 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The event is being organised by the Middle East Association for Health Informatics (MEAHI – www.meahi.org), which brings together IMIA members in the region. In addition to the conference itself, which features keynote talks, peer-reviewed papers, workshops and other activity, there will be the MEAHI General Assembly meeting and the launch of the MEAHI Nursing Informatics group. Registration for the event is still open.

The EFMI STC 2013 – Prague, Czech Republic: The Czech Society of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Informatics and the European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI) are pleased to invite you to participate in the next EFMI Special Topic Conference (STC) “Data and Knowledge for Medical Decision Support”. It will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on April 17 – 19, 2013. Keynote speakers are Prof. Marion Ball and Prof. Jan van Bemmel.

The Irish Department of Health will host several Presidency events attended by EU Commissioners and officials, Ministers of Health and government officials from Member States, Accession, Candidate and EFTA countries. Department of Health tracks, open to all eHealth Week attendees, will feature discussion on the high economic and societal value of eHealth, reforming health systems, business modelling in the “ecosystem”, empowering patients, legal issues and education and skills to support eHealth deployment and implementation. GMDS 2013 Conference – Lubeck, Germany; 01-05 September
The 58th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Medical Computer Science, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) eV will be held on 01 – 05 September 2013 in Lübeck, Germany. The focus of the conference will be on the methodological and applied research in medical computer science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Medical Documentation. The theme of GMDS Annual Meeting 2013 is: “In Focus life – Interdisciplinary research for patient care in the future.”

Health Informatics Scotland 2013 – CFP Closes 15 May
The Health Informatics Scotland (HIS’13) conference is a leading annual conference and exhibition held to showcase the latest advances in the field of health informatics. Following the introduction of a very successful research stream in 2012, submissions are invited for: Research Papers; Presentations; Posters; Workshop Proposals. This event will be held on 18-19 September, 2013 at the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Riccarton Campus, Edinburgh, Scotland.
The four themes for 2013 are:
- “eHealth Closing the Loop! Connecting and Communicating information between secondary & primary; health & social care; NHS & Patient.”
- “Nursing Impact on eHealth: a stream jointly run with BCS Nursing Group and Royal College of Nursing eHealth Group”
- “Current Research in Health Informatics: a stream jointly run by the major universities in Scotland”
- “A Scottish Jam/Hack/Camp Un-Conference with a mobile ‘App’ development theme. Participate and make up your own agenda as the event rolls on.”
In addition, the event:
- will be hosting the first “Derek Hoy Memorial Lecture”
- will also hold the NHS Scotland eHealth Awards

UPDATED 03 February: The call for submissions for the Special Track “Emerging Smart Technologies for Individualised Healthcare” (Smartech4Health) of the CBMS 2013 symposium is open and the submission deadline has been extended to 21st February 2013.

Current technology and communication developments, and the increasing willingness of people to be involved in making decisions about their health or disease, have been paving the way for advances in the area of individualised healthcare.
